Good bye to the willow
good bye to the leafy breeze
to the dewdrops
sitting at the edge of the squash leaf
to the saucer of green
lily pad of land.

Today a cool rush of air touches my face
and intersects with the heat of the sun
cutting straight down, a knife.
Today my heart opens to us,
with and without teeth
with and without homes
with and without cigarettes or children.
All of us with our arms outstretched
looking for the thing
that ties us to this earth and to eachother.

Farmer Mike says I will never come back but
I love you today and I will love you tomorrow.
Deep in the garden
we bend over in the heat
picking strawberries for one another.
